Here is the best thing I heard (What?), saw (Eye.), and read (Read.) this week, as well as the best idea (π‘) I developed.
What?
Recent BYU Speeches Podcast, “‘Consider the Wondrous Works of God’ (Job 37:14)“, Elder David A. Bednar:
“Please carefully consider the wonderful works of God. I invite you to study, ponder, and apply in your life the magnificent exhortation by the Prophet Joseph Smith: ‘Shall we not go on in so great a cause? Go forward, and not backward. Courage, and on to the victory. Let your hearts rejoice and be exceedingly glad.’ As you respond in faith to this invitation, I promise, that by the power of the Holy Ghost, you will be blessed with eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to understand your place in, and roles as, the wondrous works of God in this latter-day, marvelous work and a wonder.”
Eye.
My son, Romney, turned six this past Saturday. To celebrate, we went swimming at the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center in Herriman. Romney wanted to try the diving board. I was a bit hesitant, considering he has only taken swimming lessons once. However, we let him try, and then he proceeded to not only repeatedly jump off the low diving board (and swim back to the side without assistance), he tried the high diving board and then jumped off it repeatedly. It was amazing to watch him and his 8-year-old brother Raef jumping off the high diving board, one after the other.
Read.
1 Nephi 18:3 – “I, Nephi, did go into the mount oft, and I did pray oft unto the Lord; wherefore the Lord showed unto me great things.”
This verse of scripture reminds me of a powerful quote from President Henry B. Eyring‘s October 2021 General Conference address entitled “The Faith to Ask and Then to Act“:
- “The teenage Joseph Smith had faith sufficient to ask a question of God, believing that God would answer his heartfelt need. The answer that came changed the world. He wanted to know what church to join to be cleansed of sin. The answer he received encouraged him to keep asking ever-better questions and to act on the continuing flow of revelation that had just begun.”
What questions should we be asking?
π‘
When engaged in any type of learning (listening, watching, reading), ask one or both of these questions: 1) How does this learning draw me closer to Jesus Christ? 2) How does this learning help me become more like Jesus Christ?
Inspiration for this idea:
- While writing in my journal this week, I noted that it would be impactful to have a question to focus on each day. The two questions I’ve shared above were the result of this initial inspiration.
