Here is the best thing I heard (What?), saw (Eye.), and read (Read.) this week, as well as the best idea (π‘) I developed.
What?
followHim Podcast – 2 Nephi 11-19 – Dr. Shon Hopkin:
- “Sometimes I’ll get a question from a student that will say something like, ‘Why do we spend so much money, so many resources on temples when that could be given to feed the poor?’ And I frequently come to 2 Nephi 12:4. Isaiah says, ‘They’re in the temple. They beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning hooks.’ And often, that’s lost on my students. What is that about? Well, weapons of destruction are changed into tools of production. The temple can become a place where I become a people feeder. Does that make sense? Where I change from a sword to a plow, where I personally changedβ¦ John, you said that, that the temple becomes part of me, where I personally changed from a spear, a weapon, to a pruning hook. Perhaps the temple could be a place that we create people feeders. People walking out of the temple are now ready to feed the world both physically and spiritually. (Hank Smith) …
“I thought you could feed people with those millions of dollars, but what if you could create a machine that creates people feeders for hundreds of years, then your investment into this building, this million dollar whatever investment into this building, becomes much, much more lasting than a one-time feeding. (Hank Smith) …
“If you build people who will then change the world to be a better place and will then take what they learn in the temple and go out to feed both spiritually, emotionally, but also physically literally, like the humanitarian work of the church, that is money well spent, if there’s a space that changes the kind of human beings that we are.” (Dr. Shon D. Hopkin) - How does the house of the Lord help you become a “people feeder”?

“Journey Of Faith – Book of Mormon Documentary” on YouTube:
- “Ships did not move fast – they didn’t need to move fast. But they did need to resupply. Speed and time are modern concepts. Again, Nephi didn’t need to hurry. He wasn’t being pressured to do this. The voyage could have taken quite a long time. The distance is long, and it’s made even longer by going along the coastline and not in a straight line. But the necessity for speed was simply not there.”
- Shout out to a friend who has begun sending me video recommendations. I would invite others to do the same – I want to learn!

“The 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage” by Mel Robbins:
- I have not read this book (yet), but the concept of the 5 Second Rule was shared with me by a member of my Book Club this week.
- What is the 5 Second Rule? “The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within five seconds or your brain will kill it.”
- More about the 5 Second Rule: “The secret to changing your life isn’t knowing what to do – it’s knowing how to make yourself do it. The 5 Second Rule is the secret to changing anything about your life. You can use the Rule and its countdown method to break any bad habit, interrupt self-doubt and negative self-talk, and push yourself to take the actions that will change your life.”
- How I’ve already begun applying the 5 Second Rule: When I have the thought to put something off (such as getting out of the nice, warm shower), I count down from 5 and then take action (i.e., I turn off the water and get going with what I need to do).
