Podcast Episode Outline
Introduction
Doctrine: Covenants: “All saving ordinances of the priesthood are accompanied by covenants. A covenant is a sacred agreement between God and man. God gives the conditions for the covenant, and we agree to do what He asks us to do. God then promises us certain blessings for our obedience. The sacrament allows us to renew the covenants we have made with the Lord.”
Principle: Our Heavenly Family: “Because we are the spirit children of God, we have inherited the potential to develop His divine qualities. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can become like our Heavenly Father and receive a fulness of joy.”
Christlike Attribute: Faith in Jesus Christ: “You express your faith through action. These actions include following the Savior’s teachings and example. They include serving others and helping them choose to follow Christ. You also express your faith through diligence, repentance, and love.
“Faith is a principle of power. As you exercise faith in Jesus Christ, you will be blessed with His power suited to your circumstance. You will be able to experience miracles according to the Lord’s will. (See Jacob 4:4–7; Moroni 7:33; 10:7.)”

Be Prepared
“While David used only one stone to kill Goliath, he was prepared with five. With five! This makes me think about how I can prepare myself to face the world.
“What if each of David’s stones represented a strength we need to be triumphant in our lives? What could those five stones be? I thought of these possibilities:
1. “The stone of my love for God.
2. “The stone of my faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ.
3. “The stone of the knowledge of my true identity.
4. “The stone of my daily repentance.
5. “The stone of my access to God’s power.
“Let’s talk about how we are blessed by these strengths.”
- Don’t just read the scriptures – find ways to make them come alive!
- Questions:
- What are ways I can study the scriptures so that they come alive like this?
- followHim Podcast – Alma 39-42 – Dr. Adam Miller: “Let me offer a fun little exercise listeners could do by way of scripture study with the Book of Mormon. This was something that I did the other day preparing for a seminar that I’ll participate in starting next week on Second Nephi, chapter two, trying to help myself become more familiar with the text and its details. It’s an interesting historical curiosity that when Joseph Smith dictated the text of the Book of Mormon, he did not dictate punctuation, and it was left to the printer to supply the punctuation so that the punctuation is non-canonical, technically. Here’s a fun exercise you can try as a Latter-day Saint – you can copy and paste the text of a chapter that you’re interested in into a document, strip out all of its punctuation, and then you do the exercise of resupplying what punctuation should structure that reading of the text and see what happens. See where it takes you.”
- followHim Podcast – Alma 43-52 – Dr. David Boren: “The other thing I wanted to highlight before we jump into [Alma chapter] 43 is the importance of righteous leadership. When I was asked to be on the podcast, I did question a little bit. I don’t speak ancient Greek. I’m not a scholar of the Book of Mormon. I thought, ‘Man, what can I bring?’ Maybe it’s a little unique that I … have some experience in leadership principles. … I’m still trying to live those, but these chapters are full of really powerful leadership principles that can bless our lives.”
- Is there such a thing as “over-preparing spiritually”? Why, or why not?
- Do you believe this statement from the For the Strength of Youth guide: “God loves you. He is your Father. His perfect love can inspire you to love Him. When your love for Heavenly Father is the most important influence in your life, many decisions become easier.”?
- How has having ‘faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ’, helped you ‘be triumphant’?
- Why is it so important for each of us to know that we are a child of God?
- There are similarities between these five stones and what Elder David A. Bednar repeatedly taught in his April 2024 general conference address (“‘Be Still, and Know That I Am God’“): “We can be still and know that God is our Heavenly Father, we are His children, and Jesus Christ is our Savior.” Also note how Elder Bednar’s address focused on stillness, which is how we can triumph over Satan.
- Of all the things President Russell M. Nelson could say to the young adults of the Church, why would he focus on their true identity? (see “Choices for Eternity“)
- What has President Russell M. Nelson taught about ‘daily repentance’?
- When was the last time you recognized ‘God’s power’ in your life? How might you better recognize ‘[His] power’ going forward?
- Can you think of other scriptural accounts where individuals were very prepared, just like David?
- Do you believe this statement from the For the Strength of Youth guide: “Covenants connect you to Heavenly Father and the Savior. They increase God’s power in your life.”?
- What are ways I can study the scriptures so that they come alive like this?
What is the speaker inviting me to do, and how might I consider taking action?
Invitations
1: “Everything changes when I know who I really am. When I doubt my abilities, I often repeat to myself in my mind or out loud, ‘I am a daughter of God, I am a daughter of God,’ as many times as I need until I again feel confident to keep going.”
- Here is a powerful, daily affirmation: ‘I am a child of God!’
- Questions:
- Can you recite either the Aaronic Priesthood Quorum or Young Women Themes?
- Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Theme: “I am a beloved son of God, and He has a work for me to do.
“With all my heart, might, mind, and strength, I will love God, keep my covenants, and use His priesthood to serve others, beginning in my own home.
“As I strive to serve, exercise faith, repent, and improve each day, I will qualify to receive temple blessings and the enduring joy of the gospel.
“I will prepare to become a diligent missionary, loyal husband, and loving father by being a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
“I will help prepare the world for the Savior’s return by inviting all to come unto Christ and receive the blessings of His Atonement. - Young Women Theme: “I am a beloved daughter of heavenly parents, with a divine nature and eternal destiny.
“As a disciple of Jesus Christ, I strive to become like Him. I seek and act upon personal revelation and minister to others in His holy name.
“I will stand as a witness of God at all times and in all things and in all places.
“As I strive to qualify for exaltation, I cherish the gift of repentance and seek to improve each day. With faith, I will strengthen my home and family, make and keep sacred covenants, and receive the ordinances and blessings of the holy temple.”
- Aaronic Priesthood Quorum Theme: “I am a beloved son of God, and He has a work for me to do.
- Why is it so important for each of us to know that we are a child of God?
- Are there any affirmations that you recite periodically?
- President Jeffrey R. Holland (“Motions of a Hidden Fire“) stated: “Our prayers ought to be vocal when we have the privacy to so offer them.” Why is reciting affirmations vocally so impactful?
- Do you remember Elder Gary E. Stevenson’s invitation from the April 2023 general conference?
- “Promptings of the Spirit“: “I close with an invitation especially for all youth! Many of you start your day by standing in front of a mirror. Tomorrow, this week, this year, always, pause as you look at yourself in the mirror. Think to yourself, or say aloud if you like, ‘Wow, look at me! I am awesome! I am a child of God! He knows me! He loves me! I am gifted—gifted with the Holy Ghost as my constant companion!'”
- Why does ‘everything change when I know who I really am’?
- Have you memorized the lyrics to all three verses of hymn number 301 (‘I Am a Child of God‘) so that you can reflect on the lyrics in a time of need?
- What other ways have you found to boost your confidence?
- How do you bear testimony to others that you are a child of God?
- What do you learn about your divine identity in Moses 1:12-22?
- “[12] And it came to pass that when Moses had said these words, behold, Satan came tempting him, saying: Moses, son of man, worship me. [13] And it came to pass that Moses looked upon Satan and said: Who art thou? For behold, I am a son of God, in the similitude of his Only Begotten; and where is thy glory, that I should worship thee? [14] For behold, I could not look upon God, except his glory should come upon me, and I were transfigured before him. But I can look upon thee in the natural man. Is it not so, surely? [15] Blessed be the name of my God, for his Spirit hath not altogether withdrawn from me, or else where is thy glory, for it is darkness unto me? And I can judge between thee and God; for God said unto me: Worship God, for him only shalt thou serve. [16] Get thee hence, Satan; deceive me not; for God said unto me: Thou art after the similitude of mine Only Begotten. [17] And he also gave me commandments when he called unto me out of the burning bush, saying: Call upon God in the name of mine Only Begotten, and worship me. [18] And again Moses said: I will not cease to call upon God, I have other things to inquire of him: for his glory has been upon me, wherefore I can judge between him and thee. Depart hence, Satan. [19] And now, when Moses had said these words, Satan cried with a loud voice, and ranted upon the earth, and commanded, saying: I am the Only Begotten, worship me. [20] And it came to pass that Moses began to fear exceedingly; and as he began to fear, he saw the bitterness of hell. Nevertheless, calling upon God, he received strength, and he commanded, saying: Depart from me, Satan, for this one God only will I worship, which is the God of glory. [21] And now Satan began to tremble, and the earth shook; and Moses received strength, and called upon God, saying: In the name of the Only Begotten, depart hence, Satan. [22] And it came to pass that Satan cried with a loud voice, with weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth; and he departed hence, even from the presence of Moses, that he beheld him not.”
- Can you recite either the Aaronic Priesthood Quorum or Young Women Themes?
2: “Christ invites us to keep Him in our thoughts constantly; He tells us, ‘Look unto me in every thought.’ Thinking about the Savior gives us clarity of mind to make decisions, to act without fear, and to say no to what is contrary to God’s teachings. When my day is difficult and I feel like I can’t take any more, thinking about Christ brings me peace and gives me hope. How can we draw upon this power of Jesus Christ? Obeying our covenants and increasing our faith in Jesus Christ are key.”
- When life gets hard, think about Jesus Christ.
- Questions:
- What has President Russell M. Nelson taught about ‘obeying our covenants and increasing our faith in Jesus Christ’?
- Can you think of a practical application of ‘look[ing] unto [Jesus Christ] in every thought’?
- Are you aware of Elder Neil L. Andersen’s recent invitation to memorize five verses of scripture that you ‘really, really believe’? How can memorizing scriptures help us to ‘draw upon this power of Jesus Christ’?
- How does ‘obeying our covenants’ help us to ‘draw upon [the] power of Jesus Christ’?
- “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives“, President Russell M. Nelson, April 2017 General Conference: “We also increase the Savior’s power in our lives when we make sacred covenants and keep those covenants with precision. Our covenants bind us to Him and give us godly power. As faithful disciples, we repent and follow Him into the waters of baptism. We walk along the covenant path to receive other essential ordinances. And gratefully, God’s plan provides for those blessings to be extended to ancestors who died without an opportunity to obtain them during their mortal lives.
“Covenant-keeping men and women seek for ways to keep themselves unspotted from the world so there will be nothing blocking their access to the Savior’s power.”
- How does ‘increasing our faith in Jesus Christ’ help us to ‘draw upon [the] power of Jesus Christ’?
- “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives“, President Russell M. Nelson, April 2017 General Conference: “Today I would like to speak about how we can draw into our lives the power of our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. We begin by learning about Him. ‘It is impossible for [us] to be saved in ignorance.’ The more we know about the Savior’s ministry and mission—the more we understand His doctrine and what He did for us—the more we know that He can provide the power that we need for our lives.”
- When was the last time you thought about the Savior when you had to make a difficult decision?
- Do you believe that it’s possible to ‘keep [Jesus Christ] in our thoughts constantly’?
- What is ‘clarity of mind’? As disciples of Jesus Christ, why do we need ‘clarity of mind’?
- What sins are you willing to give up to experience the peace and hope that Jesus Christ offers?
- How can we more effectively teach our children to ‘keep [Jesus Christ] in our thoughts constantly’?
3: “Just as I chose stone number six, I invite you to meet with your class, quorum, or family and think about what other strengths you need to acquire to remain faithful to God and, therefore, overcome the world.”
- Discuss with important people what you need ‘to remain faithful to God’.
- “I actually wish David had had one more stone; that would be the stone of my testimony. Our testimony is built by personal spiritual experiences in which we recognize the divine influence in our lives. No one can take that knowledge from us. Knowing what we know from having lived our spiritual experiences is priceless. Being true to that knowledge gives us freedom. It gives us joy! If we love the truth, we will seek it, and once we find it, we will defend it.” -Sister Spannaus
- followHim Podcast – Alma 32-35 – Dr. S. Michael Wilcox: “You want a testimony that you can’t shake. I visualize it as a pyramid.
“Now we’re going to take that pyramid and we’re going to divide it into three sections, the top, the middle, and the bottom. On the top we’re going to write faith, what I believe. This is what I affirm or attest to. This is the part that I say, ‘I believe Jesus is the Christ. I know that God lives. I have faith that Joseph Smith was a prophet.’ Whatever it is you’re affirming, you’re going to put it in that top third of the pyramid. This is what I am attesting.
“But faith has to have a foundation underneath it. … If you think that faith / testimony is based on emotion, emotion isn’t a very stable foundation. And I think a lot of people feel that faith is based on kind of emotional things. Joseph Smith said that the ministers were trying to stir up religious feeling. That’s not a real solid foundation. Faith is based on evidence. Paul also uses the word substance. And in the footnote, the Greek could also give it assurance. So in that second section of the pyramid, I’m going to write the words evidence, substance, assurance.
“Now in the lower one, what does evidence, substance and assurance rest on? … I’m going to write three things. … Substance is based on reason and authority and experience. So I would say my experience tells me, provides me the evidence that what I believe or affirm is true. I haven’t had the experience, but I trust the authority. We all have to trust the authority of other people that things exist and that things work well. And I haven’t had it, but I trust others’ experiences. My reason tells me. …
“If the top part of our pyramid we’re saying, ‘This is what I know or believe,’ the second and the third layer says, ‘And I know why I know.’ It’s often important for people to just sit down and say, ‘Okay, this is what I have a testimony of. Why? What’s the evidence in my life? What substance? What assurances hold that up, so that when things shake, it’s not going to fall?’ Yeah, you can roll a few stones off a pyramid. There are some things on our testimonies that don’t belong there anyway. So you can roll a few things off, but the building is going to stand because I not only know, I know why I know.” (What? Eye. Read. 💡 Newsletter: July 28, 2024)
- followHim Podcast – Alma 32-35 – Dr. S. Michael Wilcox: “You want a testimony that you can’t shake. I visualize it as a pyramid.
- Questions:
- If I’m not a class or quorum president, how can I humbly suggest that ‘choos[ing] stone number six’ is something we should discuss as a class or quorum?
- What are your ideas for ‘stone number six’?
- The stone of my willingness to follow the Prophet.
- Alma 43:23: “[23] But it came to pass, as soon as they had departed into the wilderness Moroni sent spies into the wilderness to watch their camp; and Moroni, also, knowing of the prophecies of Alma, sent certain men unto him, desiring him that he should inquire of the Lord whither the armies of the Nephites should go to defend themselves against the Lamanites.”
- “Finding Safety in Counsel“, Elder Henry B. Eyring, April 1997 General Conference: “Another fallacy is to believe that the choice to accept or not accept the counsel of prophets is no more than deciding whether to accept good advice and gain its benefits or to stay where we are. But the choice not to take prophetic counsel changes the very ground upon which we stand. It becomes more dangerous. The failure to take prophetic counsel lessens our power to take inspired counsel in the future. The best time to have decided to help Noah build the ark was the first time he asked. Each time he asked after that, each failure to respond would have lessened sensitivity to the Spirit. And so each time his request would have seemed more foolish, until the rain came. And then it was too late.
“Every time in my life when I have chosen to delay following inspired counsel or decided that I was an exception, I came to know that I had put myself in harm’s way. Every time that I have listened to the counsel of prophets, felt it confirmed in prayer, and then followed it, I have found that I moved toward safety. Along the path, I have found that the way had been prepared for me and the rough places made smooth. God led me to safety along a path which was prepared with loving care, sometimes prepared long before.”
- The stone of my ‘stay[ing] in the middle of the straight and narrow path’.
- Alma 47:10-13,18: “[10] And it came to pass that when it was night he sent a secret embassy into the mount Antipas, desiring that the leader of those who were upon the mount, whose name was Lehonti, that he should come down to the foot of the mount, for he desired to speak with him. [11] And it came to pass that when Lehonti received the message he durst not go down to the foot of the mount. And it came to pass that Amalickiah sent again the second time, desiring him to come down. And it came to pass that Lehonti would not; and he sent again the third time. [12] And it came to pass that when Amalickiah found that he could not get Lehonti to come down off from the mount, he went up into the mount, nearly to Lehonti’s camp; and he sent again the fourth time his message unto Lehonti, desiring that he would come down, and that he would bring his guards with him. [13] And it came to pass that when Lehonti had come down with his guards to Amalickiah, that Amalickiah desired him to come down with his army in the night-time, and surround those men in their camps over whom the king had given him command, and that he would deliver them up into Lehonti’s hands, if he would make him (Amalickiah) a second leader over the whole army. [18] And it came to pass that Amalickiah caused that one of his servants should administer poison by degrees to Lehonti, that he died.”
- “Wherefore, Settle This in Your Hearts“, Elder Larry W. Gibbons, October 2006 General Conference: “Brothers and sisters, stay on the straight and narrow path. No, stay in the middle of the straight and narrow path. Don’t drift; don’t wander; don’t dabble; be careful.
“Remember, do not flirt with evil. Stay out of the devil’s territory. Do not give Satan any home-field advantage. Living the commandments will bring you the happiness that too many look for in other places.” - “Living on the Lord’s Side of the Line“, Sister Sheri L. Dew, March 21, 2000, BYU Devotional: “You’re smart. You’re even exceptional. President Gordon B. Hinckley has stated repeatedly that you are the finest generation this earth has ever seen. But that prophetic endorsement notwithstanding, you’re not that smart. You are not resilient enough to tangle with the adversary. You can never match his cunning or his talent for deception and diversion. He will outsmart, outmaneuver, and outlast you every time you willingly consent to a duel. Lucifer is like the ultimate carnival barker: ‘Step right up. Come on in. Don’t miss the greatest show on earth.’ But as soon as he has you inside his tent, he will leave you to twist in agony and isolation and darkness.”
- The stone of my willingness to follow the Prophet.
- Are there any influences in the world that you can specifically identify that are pulling you away from ‘remain[ing] faithful to God’?
- What other invitations have been recently extended in general conference to quorums and classes?
- Do you trust the promise that Jehovah extended in Ether 12:27 (“And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.”)?
- Can you explain what ‘overcom[ing] the world’ looks like to you?
- Does your class, quorum, or family have an organized way of building upon prior learning experiences and making sure all class, quorum, or family members are included?
- For example, you could discuss this invitation in a class or quorum meeting and in a family home evening lesson – but what if not everyone is present? And what if it would be beneficial to follow up on the discussion you have in the future?
- Can you think of anyone in the scriptures who acquired strengths ‘to remain faithful to God’?
- When was the last time you dove this deeply into a scriptural account? Would you benefit from diving more deeply into the scriptures more often?
- After you choose ‘stone number six’, would you be willing to share this stone, and why you selected it, with others, perhaps on social media?
4: “I testify that there is joy in praying every day, in reading the Book of Mormon every day, in partaking of the sacrament every Sunday, and in going to seminary—even in the early morning!”
- Here is a recipe for joy: 1) Pray every day; 2) Read the Book of Mormon every day; 3) Partake of the sacrament every Sunday (even when you’re on vacation); 4) Participate in gospel learning.
- Questions:
- Would you characterize your prayers, scripture study, church attendance, and gospel learning as ‘joyful’? If not, how might you change?
- What has President Russell M. Nelson promised us about ‘reading the Book of Mormon every day’?
- “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?“, President Russell M. Nelson, October 2017 General Conference: “When I think of the Book of Mormon, I think of the word power. The truths of the Book of Mormon have the power to heal, comfort, restore, succor, strengthen, console, and cheer our souls.
“My dear brothers and sisters, I promise that as you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon every day, you will make better decisions—every day. I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of heaven will open, and you will receive answers to your own questions and direction for your own life. I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind-numbing addictions.
“Whenever I hear anyone, including myself, say, ‘I know the Book of Mormon is true,’ I want to exclaim, ‘That’s nice, but it is not enough!’ We need to feel, deep in ‘the inmost part’ of our hearts, that the Book of Mormon is unequivocally the word of God. We must feel it so deeply that we would never want to live even one day without it. I might paraphrase President Brigham Young in saying, ‘I wish I had the voice of seven thunders to wake up the people’ to the truth and power of the Book of Mormon.”
- If you attended early morning seminary, would you mind sharing any powerful spiritual experiences you had?
- How can Jesus Christ’s example of focusing on joy during His Atonement inspire us to focus on joy during our prayers, scripture study, church attendance, and gospel learning?
- When was the last time you partook of the sacrament on vacation? Would you be willing to share what you felt and/or what you learned?
- Church News Podcast Episode 122: Cotopaxi founders Davis and Asialene Smith on stepping away from their company to serve as mission leaders in Brazil: [Asialene Smith] “When we were newly married, we did an internship in Grand Cayman in the Caribbean on a small island. And there was just a small branch. There was no church, we met in the courthouse. And we had a wonderful branch president, but the counselor there was called after two months of being a member of the Church. And so just a lot of new members there. But they did a great job. There’s one young man, one young woman, no Primary. But obviously, it’s a beautiful island in the Caribbean, and so there are a lot of tourists. And every Sunday, we always had tourists come.
“And the ones that stood out to us were the ones that were in their Sunday best and stayed for the full three hours, back then it was three hours. And that was such a great example to us, because when you’re on vacation, you don’t have much time anyway, and there are the beautiful beaches and the sun. It was not only just seeing them but what it was was seeing how they contributed to the branch, because the branch relied upon those members. They would give wonderful comments in the lessons. They would bear their testimonies. And this is what the branch needed, because there were so few members, and they were just learning how the Church works. And so that always stood out to us. And that’s something that we try to do when we travel.” - My mom’s 8/11/2024 text about an amazing church meeting in Laketown, Utah: “Just wanted to thank you for getting us all to church and staying for both hours today. That Meeting was amazing from the get-go. I was crying during the opening hymn. Those missionaries were adorable and our relief society lesson was fantastic. It was a very uplifting way to end our trip.”
- What my wife learned in Laketown, Utah: In Nursery, have one of the children offer a prayer before eating the snack.

- How can ‘praying every day, reading the Book of Mormon every day, partaking of the sacrament every Sunday’, and engaging in gospel learning help us to remain ‘faithful to the end’?
- Why do these simple, daily or weekly spiritual habits matter so much in the long run?
- How have you experienced you in your prayers, scripture study, church attendance, and gospel learning?
- Though you may no longer attend seminary or institute (or school for that matter), how have you embraced Jesus Christ’s promise in Doctrine and Covenants 130:18-19 (“[18] Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. [19] And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.”)?
- What are ways that we can make our prayers more transformational?
